WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF GENERATIONS OF FAITH?
The Good Shepherd Pastoral Council and staff members have been
following the development of an inter-generational learning movement
that seems to be sweeping the Catholic Community in the United
States and Canada. The motivation for the movement was an awareness
that our youngest Catholics are not learning in the same environment
that past generations have experienced. Our world has produced
a multi-media environment. Young minds can balance multiple inputs,
but become bored with very quickly unless challenged. That means
educators have to get up to speed. Then, too, some of the role
models that our children experience today are not a healthy influence.
More and more, we as Catholics are aware that we have to be the
positive examples of Jesus' teachings.
Our adult members are needed in many ways to provide that
Christian based leadership. With intergenerational learning,
older Catholics can help our future generations, not only in
learning but also in their example. By learning together, our
children see how important our belief in Jesus' teachings are
to us. Adults benefit by renewing their own beliefs and sharing
them in a community learning experience. The role of our adult
generations is to learn, but also to teach.
This new movement has become known as the Generations of Faith
movement. The use of the phrase "Generations of Faith"
is now recognized throughout the country. Good Shepherd is one
of the parishes that is on the cutting edge of developing inter-generational
learning. Our GOF program here at Good Shepherd has been blessed
to have a planning team that values experiential learning.
