"Jesus, Teach Us To Pray"
When He walked this earth with His brothers, Jesus gave the apostles
words to pray to His Father. This prayer outlines our relationship
with God. Jesus invites us to call God "Our Father."
In his beautiful examination of what the prayer, the Our Father,
means to us, Pope Benedict XVI points out that this word "Father"
contains the whole history of redemption. We are allowed to say
"Father," because the Son was our Brother and has revealed
the Father to us. It is comforting to know that God wants us
to call him "Father."
|
We must therefore let Jesus teach us what father really
means. In Jesus' discourses, the Father appears as the source
of all good, as the measure of the rectitude (perfection) of
man. The love that endures "to the end" (John 13:1),
which the Lord fulfilled on the Cross in praying for His enemies,
shows us the essence of the Father. He is this love. Because
Jesus brings it to completion, He is entirely "Son,"
and He invites us to become "sons" according to this
criterion.

The above reading is from the book Jesus
of Nazereth. You'll find passages from the book transposed
in the "Catholic Update" in your GOF Home Kits this
month. It studies the meaning of the Our Father. It is a wonderful
way to break open the Our Father for your whole family. This
is "must" reading. You'll be glad you did.
During this Generations of Faith experience we value and appreciate
what Scripture and tradition teach about praying during Lent.
If you don't feel you can "give up" something during
Lent, then you might find it a more positive approach to "learn
something" during Lent. The most rewarding thing you could
learn is how to pray, carry on an ongoing relationship with God.
In Generations of Faith, we are invited to learn creative ways
to pray, as well as traditional forms of prayer.
