WE TEACH BY EXAMPLE
People ask us why we call this experience "the Generations of Faith?"

The answer is controversial to some at Good Shepherd Church as well as all churches across our great country. We have always segregated the learning experience at Good Shepherd to school age children. It is certain that we parents want our children to know Jesus in both a "historic perspective" and to live their lives formed by His teachings. That is why we began calling our "Sunday school" sessions "Christian Formation" years ago. In a short summary, the term Christian Formation means we teach not only what happened during the time of Jesus but also how to live Jesus' teachings in modern day life. We know Jesus, and we live Jesus.

Generations of Faith invites parents and members of the Good Shepherd parish to be examples of learning and living for our children. The interest that adults show in learning to live as Jesus taught us is one of our greatest teaching tools. In all the years that we taught "Sunday school" classes the missing ingredient was always the parents. Some parents would say they are not teachers, but think about it. You are the best teachers. You teach by example. Your concern is the main ingredient in your childrens' education. In the Generations of Faith experience you are right there and know first hand what your children are learning.

Many adults who have witnessed the GOF sessions at Good Shepherd are telling us that they are enjoying the chance to relearn their faith. What an opportunity to rethink how we put our faith into practise in our daily lives. You will find that some of the discussions that we initiate in Generations of Faith are aimed at the adults attending. Other ideas we break open are to be discussed later as a family.

Be sure to pick up your Home Kits each week. The purpose of the Home Kits is to give adults tools to open discussions with their families about their faith. You may find things like games, coloring books and family activities. But you will also find thought provoking daily readings that can be shared aloud or enjoyed by inviduals in a quiet moment. There is a lot more involved in teaching our children than can be taught in a classroom. Generations of Faith helps all of us learn and teach together.
